Focus Areas

Solving complex problems through research, innovation, and community action.

The Institute for Translational Population Health Research focuses on the conditions that shape the health and future of communities.

We recognize that health is influenced by far more than healthcare. Housing, education, employment, transportation, behavioral health, social connection, economic opportunity, and neighborhood conditions all play critical roles in determining population health outcomes.

Beginning in Elmira, New York, and expanding through regional and national partnerships, we work to develop solutions that improve lives, strengthen communities, and create healthier futures.

Reimagining Behavioral Health

Behavioral health challenges affect every aspect of community life.

Across the nation, communities are experiencing rising rates of depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, trauma, loneliness, and social isolation. Traditional systems often focus on crisis response rather than prevention, connection, and recovery.

The Institute is committed to advancing innovative approaches that address the social, emotional, and environmental factors that influence behavioral health.

Our flagship Social Prescription Program explores how community engagement, social support, volunteerism, education, faith communities, recreation, and other non-clinical interventions can improve health outcomes and quality of life.

We believe that healing occurs not only in healthcare settings, but also in communities.

Understanding the Future Through Population Health Forecasting

Communities cannot solve tomorrow's problems using yesterday's information.

One of the Institute's signature areas of expertise is population health forecasting. Using trend analysis, predictive modeling, systems science, health intelligence, and advanced analytics, we help communities understand where they are today and where they may be headed tomorrow.

Our forecasting examines
  • Population change and migration
  • Chronic disease trends
  • Behavioral health indicators
  • Healthcare utilization
  • Housing instability
  • Community resilience
  • Social determinants of health
  • Emerging public health threats

Our goal is to help leaders make informed decisions before challenges become crises.

Strengthening Communities Through Health Equity

Health outcomes are often determined by circumstances beyond an individual's control.

Where a person lives, works, learns, worships, and ages can significantly influence their opportunities for health and well-being. The Institute is dedicated to identifying and addressing the structural, social, and environmental conditions that contribute to health disparities.

Our equity focus examines
  • Economic opportunity
  • Educational access
  • Transportation barriers
  • Food security
  • Healthcare access
  • Community safety
  • Social inclusion
  • Environmental conditions

We believe every community deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Transforming Systems, Not Just Symptoms

Many community challenges are interconnected.

Improving health requires more than addressing individual issues. It requires improving the systems that shape people's lives.

The Institute examines how healthcare systems, public health agencies, schools, housing organizations, faith communities, nonprofits, and government institutions can work together more effectively.

Through systems thinking and collaborative problem-solving, we seek to create lasting, sustainable change.

Our Commitment

Everything we do is guided by a simple belief.

Communities possess the knowledge, assets, and potential to solve their most challenging problems when provided with the right tools, partnerships, and opportunities.

The Institute for Translational Population Health Research exists to support that work.

Through research, innovation, ethical inquiry, and community engagement, we are helping build healthier people, stronger neighborhoods, and more resilient communities.

Our Focus Areas Are More Than Research Priorities. They Are Pathways Toward Community Transformation.
