Research

Where data meets community. Where discovery becomes action.

At the Institute for Translational Population Health Research, we believe research should do more than generate knowledge. It should improve lives. Our agenda addresses some of the most pressing health, social, economic, and behavioral challenges facing communities today, transforming evidence into measurable improvements in population health.

The Institute views Elmira, New York as a living laboratory for population health innovation.

Like many small cities across America, Elmira faces complex and interconnected challenges, including population decline, housing instability, behavioral health concerns, chronic disease burden, economic transition, neighborhood disinvestment, and health inequities.

These challenges are not unique to Elmira. They represent the realities faced by hundreds of communities throughout the United States.

By studying these issues in partnership with residents, community organizations, healthcare systems, local government, and academic institutions, we can develop solutions that not only benefit Elmira but can also inform policies and programs nationwide.

Communities are not merely subjects of research. They are partners in discovery, innovation, and change.

Social Prescription & Community Well-Being Initiative

The Institute's flagship research program examines how social interventions can improve health outcomes.

Traditional healthcare often addresses symptoms after they occur. Social prescribing seeks to address the underlying social and environmental conditions that influence health.

Through our Social Prescription Program, researchers evaluate how community connections, volunteer opportunities, wellness activities, housing support, education, workforce development, faith-based engagement, and social support networks contribute to improved health and well-being.

Research Questions

  • QCan social prescribing reduce loneliness and social isolation?
  • QCan community engagement improve behavioral health outcomes?
  • QHow do social interventions impact healthcare utilization?
  • QWhat strategies produce the greatest improvements in quality of life?
  • QHow can social prescribing be scaled across communities?
Our long-term goal is to establish evidence-based models that can be replicated throughout New York State and across the nation.

Rural and Small-City Health Innovation

Many public health solutions are developed for large metropolitan areas. Yet millions of Americans live in smaller cities and rural communities with unique needs and opportunities.

The Institute is committed to developing research specifically focused on the realities of these communities.

Research Priorities
  • Rural health disparities
  • Healthcare access
  • Population decline
  • Workforce shortages
  • Economic transition
  • Aging populations
  • Transportation barriers
  • Community resilience
  • Regional health development
We believe the future of population health depends on understanding and supporting communities of every size.

Research Ethics & Participant Protection

The highest ethical standards.
Always.

Protecting the rights, dignity, privacy, and well-being of research participants is a core principle of our work.

The Institute is committed to conducting research according to the highest ethical standards. To support this commitment, the Institute maintains an academic relationship with Claremont Graduate University, one of the nation's leading graduate research universities.

For studies involving human participants, ethical review and oversight may be provided through the Claremont Graduate University Institutional Review Board (IRB) when appropriate and required under applicable regulations, funding requirements, and collaborative research agreements.

This relationship strengthens our commitment to

  • Ethical research practices
  • Participant protection
  • Informed consent
  • Data security and confidentiality
  • Transparency and accountability
  • Community trust
  • Scientific rigor

The Institute embraces a philosophy of conducting research with communities, rather than on communities, ensuring that participants remain respected partners throughout the research process.
